HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

Overview

This course covers a comprehensive range of topics to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to confidently manage emergency situations and provide a first aid response to a casualty.

This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving cardiac arrest may occur. It is relevant for people working in education, aged and community care, sport, travel & tourism, hospitality, industry enterprises and other workplace and community settings.

Content:

  • Legal Issues and infection control
  • The principles of first aid and its applications
  • Recognition and management of emergency situations, shock
  • DRSABCD action plan
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Defibrillation, vomiting, regurgitation, recovery and reassurance
  • Drowning
  • Choking – full and partial obstruction
  • Anaphylaxis – signs, symptoms and triggers and using adrenaline auto injectors, allergic reaction
  • Asthma – signs, symptoms and triggers, different types of bronchodilators
  • Spinal injury management, head and neck injuries
  • Non-life threatening and life-threatening bleeding, nose bleeds, eye injuries, minor wounds
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains
  • Burns
  • Heart attack, angina, stroke
  • Hypothermia, hyperthermia, fever, dehydration
  • Seizures, epilepsy, febrile convulsions
  • Diabetes
  • Pain
  • Envenomation, poisoning and toxic substances
  • Diarrhoea
  • Incident reporting and review

Unit of Competency:

The following units will be included in your certificate:

  • HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
  • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support


Assessment:

Participants' learning outcomes will be assessed using practical activities designed to simulate the work environment and written questions as appropriate. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment.
